River Guardians Project

The River Guardian Project builds on the success of the Ballinderry Riverfly Monitoring Initiative (RMI) which has trained 24 volunteers to monitor the water quality of the Ballinderry and Salterstown rivers using simple biological sampling.

The River Guardian Project aims to work with the current 24 RMI volunteers whilst training a further 12 to expand the monitoring, in depth and scope.

All volunteers are receive training in RMI, whilst receiving additional training in identifying Invasive Non-Native Species, other forms of pollution evidence (e.g. sewage fungus) and monitoring for signs of protected species (e.g. White-Clawed Crayfish and Freshwater Pearl Mussels).

The project is also skilling and equipping volunteers in monitoring abiotic environmental variables (e.g. pH, conductivity and temperature) which also act as water quality indicators.
